I don't mean this to be a complete tutorial on how to draw graphics on
your ST, just a short, step by step account of how I drew the logo for
this issue of STEN, for those who are interested. The only advice that I
can give to other people when it comes to graphics, is practise with a
pencil and paper.
To make it easy to follow, I have broken the procedure of actually
producing the logo into steps. You may feel that this doesn't tell you
much that you didn't know already, I was surprised how easy it was to
draw myself!
(1) DESIGN THE LOGO
My first step in drawing the STEN logo, was to design it on a piece of
paper, just to see what I was aiming at. My drawing looked very similar
to the logo on this disk. The second step then, was obviously to start on
the drawing on my ST, my second theory being, if I can draw it on paper,
then surely I can draw it on my ST!
(2) TRANSFER IN ROUGH, TO ST
Looking at my logo that I had drawn on paper, I realised that it would be
pretty boring, and that I would have to smarten it up, I immediately
thought of the "RIVERDENE PDL" logo by SPAZ from THE LOST BOYS, each
letter has an outline of gold, and inside, the rest is velvet dark blue,
with shiny bits on the corners. I decided that this would be a nice
style, in which to furnish my STEN logo. After examining the Riverdene
logo, I loaded up Cyber paint, set up the palette to include 7 shades of
blue, and 7 shades of yellow/gold and selected "DRAW" from the menu,
having changed the brush from the cumbersome cross to a one pixel dot,
and choosing white as my drawing colour.
I attempted to recreate the "S" that was on my piece of paper, holding
the left mouse button down, as I moved the mouse in the same way as if
I'd been holding a pencil. The "S" I ended up with, was, as I examined my
handy work, much too large to fit the other 3 letters in on the same
line, so with much annoyance at this first set back, I reluctantly
cleared the screen to start again.
You are probably thinking now, 'just divide the screen width of 320
pixels by four and draw a line down the screen at each interval' Yes, a
simple solution, but my letters aren't all the same width!
So bearing in mind the rough centre of the screen, and remembering that
two letters had to fit on the left hand side of it side, I drew a second
"S", much smaller than the first, which gave adequate space for other
letters to be added along side. Then I draw then "T" and the "E", not
worrying about if the lines were straight, or that the shapes were
exactly right, just making sure that I had some basic shape, which I
could improve on later. Then I finished with the "N"
(3) TOUCH UP THE PICCY
I touched up my sketched logo, starting with the easiest letters, the
"T", the "E" and the "N". Easiest, because they contain only straight
lines, no curves like the "S". The wobbly lines that I had sketched, were
quickly replaced with straight ones, drawn using the "LINE" option.
Then I added the rim around the letters. I started this on the vertical,
and horizontal sides to the three letters that I had already touched up,
by counting in 3 pixels and drawing in this area with the white. Then I
did the diagonal lines.
To give the impression that the rim on the diagonal lines is the same
width as the rim on the others, more pixels need to be counted in, I just
kept adding pixels until it looked right.
The curves are one of the trickiest bits in the logo, so I saved the "S"
until last. Under magnification, I carefully added pixels here and there,
until the curve looked as smooth as possible, and the rim looked the same
width as on the rest of the letters. If you examine the logo yourself,
you will see how a little of the darker colours around the outside/inside
of the curve can help to make it look smoother
(4) SHADING AROUND THE RIM
The light is shining from the top right hand corner, so using a little
logic, I coloured those areas which would get the most concentration of
the light with pure white, and gradually moving away from those spots of
intense light, getting darker. To smooth the transition from one colour to
another, I have dithered the two together. Those faces that would get no
light at all, I have coloured entirely in the second darkest brown (the
first darkest being used to make the curved lines smoother) I recommend
that you load up the picture into an Art package like Cyber Paint, and
individually select a colour, and change it to one to one that really
stands out from the rest of the picture, like white, then you can see
where that colour has been used, and work out why for yourselves)
(5) ADDING THE BLUE SHINY BITS
I added these where I thought them to be appropriate, again you will have
to examine them in an Art package to see how they were drawn.
(6) THE "11"
The 11 was added after I had drawn the STEN logo, and I drew it in the
same way.
(7) THE ADDRESS
This was drawn separately and pasted on later. It is based on the 4 point
system font, but instead of the 1 pixel distance between letters, there
are 2, to make each letter clearer. The large letters were put in to
emphasis the start of each place name and the numbers.
(8) THE 'TAG'
Again this was something that "I had prepared earlier" (copyright Blue
Peter!), and pasted on afterwards.
There! A very simple operation I think you'll agree! I hope you like the
final result! If you have drawn an equally as good title screen for a
forthcoming issue of STEN, please do so, and send it to Dave, giving a
short procedure of how you when about drawing it.
Look out for stuff from me in the P.D. in the future (STATE OF MIND is
the crew that I'm in). I'd just like to also take this opportunity to say
hi to Rob A., Drax from TSK, and all the 'blokies' in France that I know.
